Guy Montpetit's intricate and impactful painting, was the lynchpin behind our exhibit: A Private Collection from Quebec. We fell in love with this work while reviewing our client's holdings...and decided to curate a group of French Canadian abstraction.
Guy Montpetit (b. 1938) is a prominent Québécois painter and muralist with a particular dedication to accessibility in the visual arts. Working within this democratic approach, Montpetit has completed a number of large-scale public art murals throughout Quebec, reaching large audiences in highly trafficked areas such as the or the .
A reflection of his social conscience, Montpetit adapted his bright, tubular style to create a visual language for children who have experienced hearing loss, offering a unique channel to express themselves through art and imagery.
This work is a paradigm of Montpetit’s signature aesthetic. Mechanic, rotund shapes, realized in saturated bold colors, interact creating a fascinating composition that seems operational. These friendly mechanical fantasies invite the viewer to consider how the shapes could move or work if they had that capacity.
Montpetit's work can be found in private collections across Canada and Quebec including the National Gallery of Canada, and the to mention a few.
